Apparently Alaska is #44 overall -- down with the Brady Bunch Bottomfeeders of CA, NY, MA, NJ, and so on -- in overall freedom according to a recent study. We are, however, #5 in personal freedom. We're getting dragged down due to economic issues (namely, our government spending per capita is really high, and a ton of people work for the .gov).
They don't control for population density or logistical considerations (like effects of climate on maintenance and lack of economies of scale for instance).
I thought the same thing. I was reminded of Sen Steven's frequent arguments that as a new, young state Alaska lacked the centuries of investment that other states had and is still "catching up." It is probably a lot more expensive to carve out a new road than to maintain an existing one.
Still, I think it is a legitimate criticism for a "freedom" index to point out that 1/3 of the workforce is employed by state or local governments. After factoring in federal employees it is probably over half of the workforce. It raises the question -- can you be truly independent if the populace is dependent on the state for livelihood?
