I have a new rule for range courtesy:
If (A) your rifle has a muzzle brake
AND
(B) it does NOT have either (1) a magnum chambering or (2) a fully automatic happy switch or (C) the need to be compliant with a stupid AWB that bans flash hiders,
THEN
You are a douchebag and probably a wimp. Seriously, who needs a muzzle brake to handle the ferocious recoil of a 5.56?
I may or may not have recently had a marginal experience shooting near someone with a rifle so-equipped...

Does .308 count as "magnum"? And what about (IV) the gun will not operate without its muzzle brake attached? :)
ReplyDeleteDoes .308 say magnum in it, like ".338 winchester magnum" or ".338 lapua magnum?" :-P So no, it isn't a big heavy "magnum" cartridge.
ReplyDeleteI cannot think of many applications where I'd want a 308 with a muzzle brake. If I have a military-pattern semiauto battle rifle, I want a flash hider. If you are shooting such a rifle it should be with other people, if nothing else at, say, a High Power match. Muzzle brakes + other people = fail. This is probably why military rifles like the FAL and M1A don't have muzzle brakes. Plus, those semi battle rifles are so heavy the 308 recoil is quite manageable. Doubly so if slung up. Triply so if wearing a shooting jacket.
If I were hunting, my rifle will be lighter (like my Browning Stainless Stalker). That makes recoil reduction more important. Hunting is still an activity done with others, though, and often with marginal hearing protection (how many people double up in the field)? I'd prefer to take a few solid punches in the shoulder than to hurt my hearing, personally.
I haven't seen a rifle that needs to use a muzzle brake; I suppose if that were the case then it'd be legit.
