Today Colorado's senate committee passed some BS gun control legislation out of committee on straight party line votes despite massive opposition. The capital was literally shut down from heavy traffic (all leaning on horns) to a packed house, 90% against gun control. Every "pro gun control" person was a paid expert--zero grassroots support. The legislators several times expressed irritation that so many pro-gun people had showed up.
The measures, among other things:
- Ban every magazine readily convertible to 15 rounds or greater. This includes the vast majority mags; even the 10 or 15 round neutered versions are convertible to 15 or greater.
- Bans most pump shotguns.
- Imposes bullshit liability requirements on owners of firearms; if your gun is ever stolen or if you sell it to someone else, you become 100% liable for the new possessor's actions.
- Universal background checks (with possible backdoor registration)
- Bans concealed carry on college campuses, despite years with falling crime rates on campus.
The antigun legislators have been pretty dismissive of the citizenry, from the outright mysognony of Joe Salazar to the dismissive comments of the committee today pissed off that people petitioned their government for redress of grievances.
Now the measures goes to the full Colorado. Three Democratic senators need to be flipped to shut down this push. Two are already stating opposition. Of the remaining individuals, Sen Nancy Todd is the most willing to listen based on face to face meetings with constituents. She actually went to the range to shoot guns even though she is scared of firearms to learn about the issue.

Here's a draft letter, or you can hit up her facebook and at least "like" pro-gun comments.
Use a subject line like "OPPOSE ALL GUN CONTROL BILLS" because the odds of every email being read carefully are low.
Ma'am,
I understand that gun control legislation will soon be reaching the floor of the Colorado Senate. I respectfully ask that you oppose this legislation.
We have spent around $15K in Colorado and with business based in Colorado in the past few years. We are planning a vacation in the next year or two where we will spend another few thousand dollars. We are members of the Colorado Shooting Sports Association.
If Colorado passes the draconian gun control measures being proposed by Mayor Bloomberg's gun control agenda, we will take our business to another western state, like Wyoming or Alaska. We love Colorado, but neither of us is comfortable spending our disposable income in a state that does not respect its citizens.
I heard that you actually chose to go shooting to learn about the subject first hand. It was refreshing to hear that there are legislators who actually care to learn about something before passing laws on the subject. Thank you for actually caring, and thank you for fighting for the rights of responsible, law abiding citizens. Please oppose all gun control legislation.
Very Respectfully,
Chris & Heather

Dear Sen _________
ReplyDeleteI sincerely hope that you will vote against all 4 of the Bloomberg bills, 1224, 6, 8, and 9, in hopes that better legislation can be crafted that actually addresses the problem of gun violence. I understand that Virginia has produced what might well be model legislation following the Virginia Tech shootings. I have not researched it, but reports I have read suggest that it is mostly (90+%) addressed to the mental health area.
We now have 3 legislators whose positions on the proposed gun laws have made the Colorado legislature the laughing stock of the nation, Salazar, Ulibarri, and Hudak.
I understand your frustration at getting e-mails and letters from all over the world on the topic of these bills. I suppose you are relieved that you're not getting Sen Hudak's mail. I sympathize with you on that. No one deserves to be getting Sen Hudak's mail. Except possibly Sen Hudak.
